March 19th to March 21st 06:00 PM to 05:00 PM
Where: Friday--991 Discovery Drive, Huntsville. Saturday/Sunday--Milton Frank Stadium, 2810 15th Ave, Huntsville, AL 35805
Contact: www.teamtac.org

This is one of the best driving schools in the area. In it you will learn car control, accident avoidance, performance driving, and emergency lane changes. I haven't even attended the school and the techniques I've observed and practiced have saved me from an accident on more than one occasion. I can't stress enough how much you can get out of this one weekend school. It will pay for itself many, many times throughout your driving career.

From the flyer:
"Friday, March 19 - CLASSROOM SESSION
991 Discovery Dr. - Huntsville
Corner of Discovery Dr. and Explorer Blvd.

Classroom instruction from 6:00pm to 8:30pm.
Instructors will go over safety and performance driving techniques. This session is free to anyone wishing to attend.

Saturday, March 20 - DRIVING SESSION PART 1
Milton Frank Stadium - Huntsville

Registration / Tech starts at 8am. Instruction starts promptly at 9am. 1 on 1 instruction on performance driving on a closed course in your own car. Lunch Provided. The lessons will include a hands course, kidney bean, emergency lane change, skidpad, braking control, and slalom.

Sunday, March 21 - DRIVING SESSION PART 2
Milton Frank Stadium - Huntsville

Registration / Tech starts at 9am. Course runs begin at around 10am. Apply skills learned Friday and Saturday on an Autocross style course. Runs will be timed and instructors will be available for ride alongs.

All entrants will need to bring a valid driver’s license and car (please clean out any loose objects, make sure the battery is secure)."

The cost for both days is $50 and is open to anyone with a legal driver's license. Anyone younger than 19 will need a signed parental consent form. Younger drivers are highly encouraged to participate as these techniques will almost surely save them from a serious accident.

Online registration for the school is available here:

Online registration for the Sunday autocross only is available here:

In the many years that I've recommended this driving school to people that I've met, I still haven't had a chance to participate in it for one reason or another.

But this year I was able to go to Friday's classroom session. And boy did I learn a lot just from that. I shot video of a few of the concepts being taught by long-time racer and instructor Alan McCrispin. And this is but a sample of what was learned by the students of this course.

Austin (awebb) from Red Baron Photography not only participated in the school, but also shot photos all weekend long--"huge thanks to all the instructors, course workers, and students for making this years Twickenham Auto Club 2010 Performance Driving School a fantastic success. Look forward to doing it again next year, hopefully without the rain "

Austin is the newest photographer to join the Huntsville Car Scene staff, so give him a warm welcome the next time you see him. You'll find plenty of pictures of your car, and probably even one of yourself. And keep Austin in mind for your other photography needs as well. We'll be seeing a lot more of him around this year!

And what a showing of cars throughout the weekend. From the blue Lotus Exige that everyone wanted to drive to the 1990s Honda Accord that no one probably noticed but me, there was everything that you could imagine under the sun. In fact, at one point on Sunday the second fastest time of the day was posted by an instructor in an H-stock car. Yes, this front wheel drive car's time beat the Lotus, Evo 10, Subaru STI, and several s2000s--proving once again that you don't have to have a race car to drive well in this school.

I was able to join Austin for Sunday's autocross and saw the great turnout on the course, in spite of the rain. But inevitably the weather got much worse, and for the first time that I've ever seen, the event was cut short. Trophies were still given out under the stadium bleachers to the hearty souls who stayed after everything was put up.

All in all, it seemed like a great weekend full of great instruction and a lot of lifelong learning by the students. The techniques learned by these students will serve them every second they are behind the wheel, whether on the race course, or 565. See everyone next year!

Won’t you please help us give this fine young lady a chance at a better life and at the same time spend a day of riding and entertainment with your friends? It was a great day to ride, and what better reason to ride than for a fellow rider. A good number of bikes turned out for the ride. It was good to meet Rocketcitymadman and other members of the Heart of Dixie Victory Riders. They put on what seemed like a good event. Ride safe everyone! And I'll see everyone at the next one.

The spectators have a fun day of watching drag racing, good food and getting to spend time getting to know there local law enforcement officers 1 on 1 instead of just passing on the street.

It was my first time out to this event, but boy was it fun. A lot of familiar faces brought out their best to have a little fun at the drag strip. Even some magazine cars came out to show that beautiful can also be fast.

It was good to see everybody again from Morgan City and Arab, as it had been years since I had been this way. And a lot of familiar faces are now carrying a badge.

Waff-48 did a story on the event earlier in the week, and also had one of their cameramen out there to shoot some footage of the police cars. Dwight from www.arab-today.com was also out covering the event. It was good to see this event getting the attention it deserves.

The spectators numbered more than in the years past, and food was gone about 4 hours before closing. The weather was sunny for most of the day with about an hour or two where we had cloud cover and the wind picked up. But it cleared up and kept the weather great for racing.

There were several very fast Mustangs and Camaros as well as a Viper that just drove off the street and onto the track to run in the high 7s. There was also a beautifully restored Chevy that was as fast as it was pretty. Some quick imports joined the mix to give some of the v8s a good run. There were even rat rods racing on replica vintage tires. There was something here for everyone and it kept spectators hanging around until the track closed.

All day long, the police cars and the police car replica--'X2' as it's known--were giving rides down the track. I'm surprised how quick the Suburban was running considering its weight and how many kids it was usually hauling. It even gave the police Charger a good run. It kinda shocked me to see the Crown Victorias only running in the 11s. The newer vehicles are substantially faster.

It is important to note that there were no tax dollars used at this event. All the fuel and other consumables for the police vehicles was donated. Usually there's more municipalities participating in this event, but they had other events tying up their cars this year. Perhaps next year Guntersville will be back to see if they can beat Arab again. Maybe even Huntsville will get in the mix.

This event has the potential to be a large fundraiser for the Relay for Life, as well as a meet and greet that allows the public to get close and personal with the people that help enforce the laws. And you get to ride in cop cars at speed--without doing anything wrong.

I want to thank Kevin and Mitch for their hospitality and putting on a great event. Be sure to check out the gallery for videos of the runs. I'll see everybody again next year.

A good turnout at Jeff's at the end of a beautiful Saturday. A lot of really great cars came out and some old friends from years ago. Tony's awesome Camaro took home the trophy it's first time out this season, but it must have been a hard choice as a lot of great cars were there. Munchie quickly swung by, but he was so quick I didn't even get a photo of his car, which is always featuring a new color on the wheel trim rings. It was great end to a busy day.
