Will Rocket City Mustang Club have to change its name?

If it's left up to Ford Motor Company, it might happen. Seems they've now jumped on the Greedy Carroll Shelby bandwagon:

Ford's Greed

You'd think as poorly as they're doing in the market, they wouldn't want to alienate potential customers, but then they've never been known for great marketing minds, especially since Bill Ford took over.

After reading the thread, I'm sure that there is a reason behind their actions. According to the thread, the names are Trademarked. From what I learned in my Chamber of Commerce seminar on intellectual property rights, you can trademark a common word, although it is not recommended, due to the ability for the brand to be diluted easily.

It's harder for a word like "Google" to become brand diluted, but it has been. The same thing has happenned to "Kleenex" and "Xerox".

The only reason I see that Ford would do this in select cases is where they see their brand image being diluted.

I just read on al.com where Mayor Spencer is trademarking Huntsville and all parties using the name are subject to incarceration and hefty fines.

Are you still understanding?

The Rocket City Wild Horse Brought by Spaniards in 1500s and Still Roam the Western US Club regrets this news.

Not true - you might want to reread the thread now that more have posted. Donald Farr, editor of Mustang Monthly magazine is even concerned. They are targeting legitmate companies that have been in business for years - just a small list of potential defendents:

California Mustang Parts
Dallas Mustang Parts
Oklahoma Mustang Parts
Mustangs Unlmited
Orlando Mustang
Texas Mustang Parts
Mustang Monthly
Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords
Laurel Mountain Mustang Parts
Mustang Drag Racers Association
Fun Ford Weekend
etc., etc.

I still the only reason they should be doing it is because they feel that the brand is being diluted. But if that's the case, it's waaay too late for that. If they wanted to take action, they should have done it decades ago.

About 5 years ago I had a store front on highway 231/431. I aquired a large 8'x16' F _ _ D oval logo banner that I hung up in the window while I was remodeling. A representative from the 'company' located me at the shop and instructed me to take down the banner. So much for FREE advertising! Now what did I do with that banner?

D_mn, You know how I think! I must admit I was a little intimidated by the representative with every logo the 'company' own's on their jacket.

Harley Davidson has been doing the same thing for years .. That is the reason you see so many patchs turned upside down..About 2 weeks ago I saw a man with a tatoo of his 66 mustang and the mustang logo. He also has one of his 55 f100. I hope the fomoco police dont make him take them off..

Ouch! That would hurt! Then they'd find the tattoo parlor where it was done and tell them to stop, then they'd find the artist who originally drew the logo and tell him to stop, etc, etc...

If I did a ground up restoration, is it still built by Ford? I would submit it's now a Dorner Mustang, and I will now control all issues concerning my car.

I know that if you assemble a kit plane, you are considered the manufacturer in any liability cases. Many people who sell a used kitplane will dissassemble a portion, and sell it as a kit to eliminate the association of builder.

The same is being proposed for kit car and motorcycle manufacturers.
