What Size Videos Do You Prefer?

I have the capability for 3 different formats of videos. I've always just used what seemed best for the application, but I want some feedback to see which format you like best. Vote!

Bigger is not faster. Faster is smaller.

FWIW, when I pull video off my Sony MiniDV video camera, a decent postable size is 320x240 @ 512kbps.

A 15 second drag strip video (burnout, stage, run, and a pause on time on scoreboard) ran about 1 mb in size.

For a frame of reference, the same 15 second drag strip clip would be the following file sizes for the following formats:
160x112, 8 frames/sec = 25*15 = 375k
640x480, 16 frames/sec = 600*15 = 9mb
640x480, 30 frames/sec = 1.3*15 = 19.5mb

Unless it is a special run, for those type of clips, I'd usually use the 160x112.

I would like to see the largest format for interesting stuff (Gary White leaving Dairy Queen month before last), and the tiny format for most everything else. Maybe the large or middle format for incar autocross runs, on course video at TGPR, really cool drag strip runs, etc.

That's usually what I do. Sometimes (like Gary leaving) it is hard to tell what will be worth higher quality and what won't. But for the most part, any interesting stuff that I know about in advance I shoot with the next higher quality. I only use the highest quality for really special stuff, like the Studebaker at Moulton.

Most everyone is liking the 640x480, 30 frames/sec video clips. But that means that a 10 second drag pass will be 13mb to download. That's a 5 minute download for a 10 second clip.

I just want you to understand this before I start making everything those larger clips.

could you record in the larger format and scale down for no-so-interesting bits?... or even to give an option?

Unfortunately no. I don't post process the videos in any way simply because of the time it would take. I can review pictures at over 1/sec, but video I have to watch in real-time. If I did any more editing on video clips other than watching them, I'd be spending too much time on them. A friend of mine was making compilation videos for a while, but he's been gone for a while. I'd love to have someone review the clips and make a summary movie that I could post up.

I started thinking about the recompressing idea and think that it would be possible if something exists that allows batch recompression or trancoding. I've researched the idea briefly, but haven't yet played with any of the programs. My younger brother does some video production and I've consulted with him as well, but if any of you know something that you use or that I should try, post here.

Ideally, what I need is something that can work on win9x, and allow me to select a group of files to transcode and a destination where they should go when they are done. Then I press a button and walk away.

sportbike videos

I've got about 12 30 minute to 1 hr. videos on Mini-DVD, DVD, and my computer files. They are sport-touring to race pace of Deal's Gap, AL 65, Skyline[up to 176 mph in the turns and straights by anonymous], Sewanee hill, Monteagle hill, Altamont, Beersheba Springs, Little Talladega racetrack, Barber racetrack, filmed off the front and back of the bike. Let me know when we can download. A little at a time that is.

The pics and videos are posted with the event listing on the calendar, but in the event title there's the word "PICS" in parenthesis. Also another way to find event pictures and video is to look at the What's New forum. This has posts indicating what events have pictures and/or video posted. Sorry for any confusion.

I've started shooting videos in 640x480, 16 frames/sec. This is higher quality, but will increase download times about 10 times until I can find a suitable batch convertor to recompress the videos into a smaller size. Feedback on this change is welcome.
