Autocrossing is a time-based event in which cars race against the clock on a course made of cones. Doesn't sound complicated or exciting, but it is the complete driving experience, allowing you to push the limits of you and your car in a controlled environment.

This is a double-header autocross weekend with a combined Birmingham/Huntsville points and an overall winner in addition to the normal winners.

This was day one of the race weekend, bringing up many fast cars from the Birmingham region. The course was designed where many of the higher powered cars couldn't use their power. And the trailered s2000, Evo, and Mustang really felt the effects of this design as you would hear them get on the throttle just to get on the brakes the next split second. Nevertheless, it was a challenging course that kept drivers on their feet, and at times even the course workers.

The morning clouds cleared away to allow the heat to turn to humid summer levels. Even with sunblock, many people walked away from the day sunburned. But we had some new class brought to the autocross in the form of umbrella girls and well dressed passengers. Okay, so it was just Donna holding an umbrella while working grid to avoid sunburn, and Brett's significant other taking a ride with him on the course before she went to work--but it's a start!

Spectators have finally started realizing that the best vantage point is actually off the course, and there were a lot today enjoying the event including the grass cutting guy.

I had other events to cover so I was coming and going several times during the day attempting to get pictures of all the cars in the grid, the drivers with their cars, and the cars on course. I think I came close to accomplishing the goal, but my Olympus camera's shutter got stuck closed right in the middle of the one run group I know I didn't have. It guess that's bound to happen after almost 8 years and who knows how many hundred thousand shots. So if you don't see yourself in the pictures, my apologies. Anyone got a used camera for sale?

It's always fun out there. If I had the tires mounted on the Porsche, I'd probably run it.

There's too many other things to do. I have 10 tires I need to buy to get 3 other cars back on the road, including the Altima.

Besides, the Altima has a slipping trans, two bad CV joints (one is reaaaalllly bad), a bad timing chain tensioner (I can hear the chain at certain rpms), a bad thermostat, leaking power steering lines, and bunch of other little stuff that needs attention. And then the side that got bashed up where those stupid illegal Mexicans who work for C&K Roofing hit me and then tried to run. And this is just one car. Multiply this times 13 (I take care of my parents cars too), and it gets to be quite a bit of work. I'm surprised I don't buy oil by the 55 gallon drum. I really do need to get a lift.
