Those are real numbers. That's why I coded that feature. You can click on that and see what all of them are. The popular spiders are all identified too.

This site reaches more than any other site in the local area, but the demographic of the scene in general has a lot of people that are just comfortable with email. Facebook and other systems like that are changing that, but it will take hand-holding and encouragement to get everyone online. I want to shoot some step-by-step videos and make an entire help section, but again, I need time.

There's a lot of people reading what we write, and we'd have even more perspectives if we had more registered users online. I've had some ideas on how to make this happen like a user of the week/month that pulls from the users logged in during the week/month.

I've actually got part of this coded, but I need to finish it. And then the user of the week/month gets a prize if they post within 24hrs of them being announced as the winner in the official thread.

I haven't had enough time to modify some of the default registration emails to guide new users to the Introductions forum and the other popular threads on the site. I think that would also help.

Anyone have other ideas they've seen on other sites?

Yep, the intro threads is actually part of an automated verification process that will eliminate me having to manually validate new users--their intro thread would weed them out straight from the get go.

But I have to figure out all the permission systems for this to work with the paid subscriptions levels. It's actually a pretty complicated venn diagram that needs to be translated into the exact usergroup stuff.

Why do you need to validate new users? The bots? I eliminated bot access to my forums long ago with a simple script change to the registration page. All you do is ask a question on the registration page and tell them the answer is located in the forum, then link to the thread with the answer. If you want to go further like I did, you can color some of the letters in your answer and tell them to only type the colored letters. Bots can't get past that at all.

I googled and found a php example and pasted it into my forum scripts. I didn't develop the idea on my own.

It's guaranteed to kill bots dead when they try to register.

Spammers are no longer bots, but live people working in call-centers in foreign countries and even here in the US. The question/answer system here on HCS is pretty tough, sometimes even for true enthusiasts. And even so, there have been 35 people to get through since its inception. They did their homework to find the answers.

A simple script can no longer identify the real from the fake, as many new registrants are human, which takes a human to figure out.

I'm sure once you get the paid subs up that will put an end to that .

It actually won't. Registration will always be free. Paid subscriptions will allow more access to new features on the site (ones that will cost the site more money to offer).

The idea is that if a newly registered user can only post to the introduction thread and if it's not legit, it will be pretty quick to weed them out. But because this method uses usergroups and usergroup promotions, I have to make sure all of that methodology will work correctly before implementing it.

830 now.

Pretty impressive, isn't it? And I looked at the stats from statcounter and we're still about 2/3 of the traffic of this same week in 2006. Still more room to grow.
