The 113mpg Honda Z

Yep, you read that right, 113mpg.

I just found out about this little gem of a car today--almost 30 years too late! The car was discontinued in 1972.

According to a cited reference in the Honda Z wikipedia, "One car magazine recording 136 mpg-imp (2.08 L/100 km; 113 mpg-US) when they didn't exceed 30 mph. Now, that doesn't sound very fast, but scooters that run that speed sometimes don't get that type of mileage.

But the Honda Z returned in 1998 in Japan, this time with an updated look and standard 4WD. ZZ Top even helped with the introduction of the car since it was known as the Z or 'zed'. The campaign was called "ZZ top on the Z". (I always did wonder what happened to them... )

What's interesting is the car's power-to-weight ratio and aerodynamics must have been just right. Because in 2008, a 1971 Z600 (600cc) bored out to 700cc set the land speed record for stock body production cars with 750cc engines at over 100mph.

Do you think a car like this would sell in today's market? What about to people that are considering motorcycles?

Microcars and Kei (city) cars are getting really popular. And they make sense for developing nations trying to get people off motorcycles and into cars and in highly dense cities in developed nations that have no room for parking.

What I like are the microcar sports convertibles:
