How often do you change oil?

I was just reading an article online from Los Angeles about the state of California initiating a campaign to get people stop changing their oil so often. A study showed a majority of people still adhere to the process of changing their oil every 3,000 miles. I know a lot of fleet vehicles go by the every 5,000 miles schedule so thats what I use. How about you, with the newer oil blends and cars made of better materials, do you change too often,or go by what your manufacturer recommends?

I try to stick to every 3-3.5k on the SRT4 since I run it pretty hard. The Mustangs get done whenever I do it haha.

I go by the smell of the oil, and how it looks smeared on a piece of laser print paper. We drive our cars hard. Sometimes only 2.5k on the GMQ and the oil life indicator is on 15%, and the oil has that special smell to it. Car knows the engine gets red-lined all the time and makes adjustments to the oil life on our car. BMW sees nothing but max revs. Oil changed on that every month, or 25 miles, maybe.

I just do it every 3k. It's easy enough and I enjoy it so why not.

I've actually gotten to the point when I can 'hear' that it's time to change it. You'll hear just a bit more valvetrain noise as the oil additives break down and the viscosity becomes basically only the lower number on a multi-grade oil. This is really bad for 0-40 since the viscosity basically turns into a 0 weight.

I'll also go by color and 'feel' of the oil. Lately, I've start to do analysis with every oil change. I'm sure that's going to give me even more information.

I try to use high quality synthetics since my cars do sometimes go well beyond recommended intervals when you include sitting time.

I am lucky with my 72 pickup. I think it has the optional self-changing oil system on it. I just check it once a week and add a quart and its good for a while. All I need to change is the filter.

Once every six months in the Mustang. It's not a daily driver so that equates to about every 2000 miles. My other cars get oil changed every 5000 miles along with a tire rotation.

not sure when i changed the oil last... hardly put miles on, but use mobil one which is good for 20k
oil filters usually like 7500 or so

cars are so much more efficient then they were back in the 3000 mile days
shops say 3k for $$
honda has the oil life at 7500, and i think most manufactures do too

i went 6 years on my old GMC Jimmy, when i did the intake and opened it up, absolutely clean inside too

my sister went 5 years 34k on her berretta and was still fine years after... go figured

i just love the ultra paranoid gotta change their oil under 3k miles (despite using syntheic) poeple but will NOT change the auto trans fluid..... makes ya wonder....
