Ever Had to Recover Data from a Hard Drive with Bad Spots?

I experienced that this week. As if running out of storage space last week wasn't enough to slow things down, this week the Hitachi 4gb Microdrive used as storage in the older Sony camera decided that it wanted to have a bad spot right where a picture file was.

I'm experienced in data recovery, so this wasn't too big a deal, but it was a pain to find the tools I needed since the last time I did this was under DOS.

After I recovered what was possible from the picture file (only 512 bytes was lost due to a bad sector), I accidently tried to display the original bad file in a browser.

What I learned was that a browser will retrieve in a few seconds almost all the data that took me days. It won't retrieve the whole picture because of the bad spot on the hard drive and quits once it hits it. But it will display whatever it did get from the bad file.

Then you simply "save picture as" and you've recovered that part of the picture. Very simple trick that someone may get to use someday. I thought I'd post it up.
