Chevy Volt Haters Rejoice!

http://jalopnik.com/5890072/gm-halts...use-sales-suck

Quote:
General Motors has told 1,300 employees at the automaker's Detroit Hamtramck plant they will be temporarily laid off for five weeks as the company halts production of the Chevrolet Volt and its European counterpart, the Opel Ampera.

"Even with sales up in February over January, we are still seeking to align our production with demand," said GM spokesman Chris Lee to the Detroit Free Press. Another way of phrasing that? Because sales still suck.

Lee said employees were told Thursday that production would put on hold from March 19 to April 23.

Chevrolet sold 1,023 Volts in the U.S. in February and has sold 1,626 so far this year.

I was behind one on University. I was stunned. I have never seen one in the flesh. I would like one if the cost was not so stupid. I can burn a lot of fuel for that price in any of my cars

I see a red one all of the time on 565.

I saw a black one on the way to Bham yesterday, too. They're really not THAT bad looking, but I agree the pricing is outrageous.

...my neighbor bought one and he let me drive it. I was very surprised at how it accelerated and how quiet the motor was. I believe he told me it was good for about 37 miles on a charge. Also last month I was at the Corvette Plant and they have about 10 charging stations for employees and visitors...I'll stay gas engine for as long as I can.

That's what happens when demand can't be created for a supply that shouldn't have been created. The whole hybrid/electric thing is being pushed in the US waaaaay too much. The rest of the world is switching to direct injection turbo diesels. I'm afraid if we keep up this nonsense, we'll be stuck with the equivalent of not using the metric system.

Who doesn't use the metric system? I use the metric system a lot.

Yeah I agree the US needs to push towards only using the metric system. And direct injection really is the way to go with conventional fuels. I still say hydrogen is the best choice. But no one is pushing it.

The Brits don't totally use the metric system. It's a mix.

Most of the world does though. We need to get with it. Standard units of measurment are anything but.

Whoever came up with 12 inches = 1 foot and 5280 feet = 1 mile is insane.

The diesels I've seen overseas on recent trips to Asia and Europe all easily get 40+. That's where our hybrids are. I don't know why the country is resisting diesel? Makes you wonder...

True, but they're better than us, that's for sure.

As long as we remain a top-tier first world nation that everyone else caters so. But if that ever changes, everyone will be learning different languages and using metric a lot more...

Eh, My dad had a Jetta when I was in high school that got 52 highway. He bought solely because it was the highest MPG vehicle he could get.

If I am not mistaken, it was a TDI Turbo Direct Injection? I don't follow VW Acronyms.

Looked it up on wikipedia, was correct.

Still fairly irritated with him for getting rid of that car. I learned to drive in it. It was black with alloys and the interior was spotless. Was only driven from athens to b-ham and back daily for a few years before 5th gear went out. I could have driven it to school and work with 4 gears while I saved for a trans.... Loved that car. Pretty quick, and awesome MPG. Can't beat it. Plus it looked pretty good.

I bet you could find one if you wanted one. The older cars are what people all over are overlooking (except Huntsville). Older 90-93 Accords with IHE can get 30+ city. A friend of mine drove his 2 door that smoked from here to Dallas and averaged 38mpg.

Spoken like a true enthusiast. There's something about that, isn't it? I still have the first car I ever drove in. I have the second, and all the others afterwards. I plan to keep them all. Now, if I can only find the time to get them all running 100%, I'd get some more now that 95 G20ts, Protege5s, and IS300s are pretty cheap.
